Community Reactions to the 2024 Vice Presidential Debate

Throughout the vice presidential debate, members of the South Asian community reacted to Governor Walz’s answers and JD Vance’s lies on a number of issues.

On Immigration Policy and Rhetoric:
“[JD Vance] terrorized the entire Springfield community by scapegoating the Haitians, you hurt the WHOLE COMMUNITY, and they are standing up for their Haitian neighbors. You stirred up threats against schools and hospitals. You then admitted you lied about it, and continued to do so, knowing you were endangering lives. Lives of people you represent. Shame on you.”
“Shady JD, you are lying, your boss did the most monstrous thing that I remember my government doing in my lifetime, ripping children out of their parents' arms. You are not answering the question because you WILL help Trump do it again.”
“If [JD Vance] is talking about people falling prey to drugs and children/families being endangered because of immigrants, what about the immigrants looking for safety?” … “He scapegoats immigrants for our country's drug problems.”
On Reproductive Rights
“JD, when it comes to women and family building, MIND YOUR OWN DAMN BUSINESS”
“In every state where it has come up, abortion has been protected by ballot initiatives. You are lying JD, Project 2025 specifically sets up government access to women's medical records, and elimination of abortion.”
On January 6th:
“[Trump] peacefully gave over power? No, he ORGANIZED AN INSURRECTION. He gave over power because he legally had to. And then he paraded around saying Biden stole the election.”
“JD couldn't answer the January 6th question. His boss is a criminal and he has promised, out loud, in public, to join him in the crime next time.”
On Protecting Our Children from Gun Violence:
“How is making our school buildings more like a fortress going to protect students from gun violence? These kids are supposed to be in the buildings.”
“YES COACH [WALZ], IT'S THE GUNS!!!!!!!! Common sense gun legislation is COMMON SENSE”
On Climate Change:
“Carbon emissions are ‘weird’ science, says the weird guy.”
On Housing:
“You are lying AGAIN JD: investors buying up homes is what has driven up home prices, not immigrants -- you are shameless with that dog whistle.”
On Unions and the Economy:
“The party of union busters is trying to say they are on the side of high wages? No way Shady [JD]. Just doesn't pass the smell test.”
