Why I’m Supporting Kamala Harris: A Personal Journey from Skepticism to Advocacy

Raji Rama

In December 2021, our Asian-Tamilian families in the U.S. gathered for Christmas at our home in Redmond, WA. Amidst the fun, laughter, movies, jokes, and games, the conversation turned to politics. My cousin, a dedicated feminist, asked if I would support Kamala Harris if she were the 2024 Democratic nominee. I am not for identity politics, so I responded that I needed to know more about her policies and her character before making a decision, as I approach such matters with a pragmatic mindset.

My Tamilian heritage has taught me that a leader should embody courage, generosity, knowledge, zeal, and alertness—values expressed centuries ago by Thiruvalluvar, a philosopher from Chennai. These timeless principles are still relevant today. In this article, I'll share my journey of discovery, my newfound admiration for BRAT and coconut memes, and why I'm now committed to supporting Kamala Harris for President of the United States.

I migrated from Chennai (the same place from where Vice President Kamala Harris's grandparents are from) to the U.S. 32 years ago and am at present living in Redmond, WA. My involvement in politics began with the 2020 elections. The free time that opened up with COVID (as I was furloughed by my company for few months) and the rushed Supreme Court confirmations in 2020, while denying a hearing for Obama's nominee Merrick Garland in the election year 2016, deeply concerned me. During the 2020 election cycle, I joined the Chitthi Brigade, a grassroots organization founded by three friends from New York, to give voice to my concerns. As we all know, the 2020 election outcome then led to the January 6th events.

Before the June 2024 debate between Biden and Trump, I was prepared to support the Biden-Harris ticket, given the implications of the Dobbs decision and the Supreme Court's stance on presidential immunity. However, after the debate, I joined X (which I had resisted for a long time) and expressed that Democrats needed to reconsider Biden's candidacy. This led me to explore alternatives through various sources like the New York Times podcast, David Axelrod opinions, Pod Save America, and Jon Stewart, but in my opinion, none of those shows provided satisfactory explanations or alternatives. I came across an Atlantic article by Elaina Plott Calabro, who traveled with the Vice President extensively, which piqued my interest. I also listened to Ezra Klein's show, "Is Kamala Harris Underrated?"

I set out to learn more about Kamala Harris—her character, her values, and what we can expect from her as a leader. I believe that the character and value system of a President are crucial in addressing the complex challenges that come with the role.

Kamala Harris has shown deep care for her family and friends, which extends to her interactions with others, particularly children. In high school, she stood up for a friend being molested, demonstrating courage that continued throughout her career as a prosecutor and DA in California. She has faced criticism, including mockery of her laugh, with grace, embracing it as a part of her identity. Her gratitude towards her mother and recognition of past sacrifices reflect a deep sense of humility.

As DA, she mentored other women and encouraged them to find their voices, underscoring her belief in passing on the baton of leadership. She is known for her thorough approach to problem-solving, and I find this approach a stark contrast to the superficial methods of the Republican nominee for the President of the United States.

Kamala Harris’s intelligence and dedication are evident from her achievements, such as being the first female, Asian American DA elected at 39, and her choice to serve in government rather than pursue corporate wealth. Her commitment to justice is reflected in her questioning of high-profile figures and her advocacy for reproductive rights. Her leadership has shown both competence and a sense of fun, and her choice of Tim Walz, who complements her, as a running mate demonstrates her strategic thinking.

Given these qualities, I believe Kamala Harris is well-suited to lead the country. Unlike Trump, who Kamala Harris aptly described as an "unserious man," Harris’s thoughtful approach promises progress and responsible governance. I’d be remiss not to add that at least 16 (or more) of Trump's high-level staffers in his first term as President oppose his reelection. According to them, Trump simply doesn't come prepared for the meetings, is not inquisitive nor reads the briefs given to him, and does not like to hear diverse opinions.

In my discovery journey, I have watched these videos to derive the characteristics of Kamala Harris, some of which were recorded 14 years ago, thus proving her consistency in her value system:
